Issue 74 27 July, 1999 _______________________________________________________________________________ Core Warrior is a newsletter promoting the game of corewar. Emphasis is placed on the most active hills - currently the '94 draft hill, the beginner hill and the '94 no-pspace hill. Coverage will follow where ever the action is. Post questions to rec.games.corewar. All new players are infinitely welcome! _______________________________________________________________________________ Greetings... A timely flurry of activity has occurred since last issue, with even the alternative (and secret) hills receiving at least a successful submission or two. The '94 hill has been the scene of many a battle for control, whether you perceive the opponents to be veterans and new players, p-spacers and pure warriors, or even magic age warriors and recent submissions. The deadline for the IWT has been extended, so if you haven't done so already, find out how to enter at the tournament's home page: http://www.concentric.net/~liminal/IWT/index.html A guide from getting started through to submitting a warrior to one of the hills is now available on Philip Kendall's corewar page: http://www.kendalls.demon.co.uk/pak21/corewar/index.html This issue - Ben Ford shares his code for WingShot, and Ken Espiritu reveals his stone/imp Baseline Plus. -- John Metcalf _______________________________________________________________________________ Current Status of the Internet Pizza Server ICWS '94 Draft Hill: Hill Specs: coresize: 8000 max. processes: 8000 duration: after 80,000 cycles, a tie is declared. max. entry length: 100 minimum distance: 100 rounds fought: 200 instruction set: ICWS '94 Draft # %W / %L / %T Name Author Score Age 1 42.5/ 34.7/ 22.8 Digitalis 5 Christian Schmidt 150.2 15 2 41.4/ 35.0/ 23.6 Self-Modifying Code Ben Ford 147.8 18 3 36.1/ 26.7/ 37.2 Vain Ian Oversby 145.4 19 4 36.3/ 27.5/ 36.3 The Stormbringer Christian Schmidt 145.1 72 5 37.4/ 29.8/ 32.8 Stonewashed Christian Schmidt 145.0 12 6 34.5/ 24.2/ 41.3 One Step Beyond John Metcalf 144.8 33 7 39.6/ 36.5/ 23.9 Recycled Bits David Moore 142.7 72 8 32.4/ 22.4/ 45.2 Glass Ben Ford 142.4 11 9 40.5/ 39.1/ 20.4 Stranger John Metcalf 142.0 29 10 40.8/ 40.0/ 19.2 Snowman John Metcalf 141.6 16 11 42.9/ 44.2/ 13.0 Qshot Christian Schmidt 141.5 2 12 36.8/ 33.3/ 29.9 The Outsider Simon Wainwright 140.2 36 13 39.4/ 39.1/ 21.5 Rubble P.Kline 139.7 7 14 39.3/ 39.0/ 21.8 death by redcode Simon Wainwright 139.6 51 15 31.7/ 24.2/ 44.1 Alive and K(qu)icking Zet Leonardo H. ( 11 authors last issue, 10 the issue before ) Only four warriors survive since last issue as some powerful warriors are unleashed and the hill stabilises. Three authors have been either using or testing Q^4 scans using sne/seq/jmp technology. The full implications of this remains to be seen. Perhaps, the Q^4 will cause the demise of the q-scan! Afterall they are smaller than older qscans, and will gradually push them from the hill. However, their advantage also works against them - having a smaller memory footprint means a Q^4 battling another Q^4 will score less hits and consequently less points. The hill will be held in the icy grasp of p-spacers and scanners once again :-) _______________________________________________________________________________ 94 - What's New (Sorted by rank and score) # %W / %L / %T Name Author Score Age 1 46.9/ 35.2/ 17.9 Toki Christian Schmidt 158.7 1 1 42.5/ 32.8/ 24.6 Digitalis 5 Christian Schmidt 152.2 1 1 41.8/ 35.0/ 23.2 Self-Modifying Code Ben Ford 148.6 1 1 34.2/ 22.3/ 43.5 One Step Beyond John Metcalf 146.1 0 1 39.2/ 33.0/ 27.8 The Outsider Simon Wainwright 145.4 0 1 32.6/ 20.0/ 47.4 Alive and K(qu)icking Zet Leonardo H. Liporati 136 3 An age of 19 since last issue brings about the demise of four aged warriors, Liquid Fire (age 140), Brigadeer (169), Baseline Plus (232) and Fixed (235). Once again a balance of scanners and stone/imps possess the top few ranks. _______________________________________________________________________________ Extra Extra - WingShot by Ben Ford Currently King of both the no-pspace and tiny hills, and recently atop Pizza's 94 hill, clearly WingShot is a warrior currently out-performing other warriors of it's type. The combination of a Bi-Shot style clear and a .8c scan proves effective in several environments, though like most oneshots it suffers against CLP-type components such as the one used in Kline's Rubble. ;redcode-94 ;name WingShot ;author Ben Ford ;strategy 0.80c BiShot-style oneshot ;assert !(CORESIZE%10) && (MAXLENGTH>=20) start equ oscn oinc equ 10 omod equ 10 oset equ (omod*((MAXLENGTH+MINDISTANCE)/omod)-1) odif equ (omod*((CORESIZE/2)/omod)) otic equ (CORESIZE/omod) optr spl {oset, >odif+oset-3 dat {10, >odif ospl spl #10, <-MINDISTANCE oclr mov ospl, }optr mov ospl, >optr obmb djn.a oclr, prime sub.f #-st-1, jump prime: mov.i impy, impy jump: djn.f impy-st-1,<-100 impy: mov.i #st, *0 The four line stone is one of the most unique I have seen.
